How to setup @live.com, @live.com.au, Live or Hotmail Email Addresses on iPhones

On your iPhone, do the following:

Settings >

Mail, Contacts, Calendars >

Add Account… >

Other >

Under Mail, choose Add Mail Account >

In New Account, enter the following:

Name Your Name

Address Your Email Address eg myemail@live.com.au or myemail@live.com.au

Password Your Password (NOTE: This is your email password, make sure it is approximately 8 or less characters! I tried this with a much larger password and the sign up kept failing. I have not tried any higher than 8 characters, if you get this working with higher let me know).

Description Live Email Account

Now press Save >

Under New Account, choose POP >

Incoming Mail Server:

Host Name pop3.live.com

Username Your Email Address, eg myemail@live.com or myemail@live.com.au

Password Your Password (NOTE: Make sure your password is approximately 8 or less characters!)

Outgoing Mail Server:

Host Name smtp.live.com

Username Your Email Address, eg myemail@live.com or myemail@live.com.au

Password Your Password (NOTE: Make sure your password is approximately 8 or less characters!)

Now tap Save.

After it has Verified POP account information, you can change the advanced settings by selecting the account that was added and scrolling to the bottom of the screen.

How to install Cracked Applications on your jailbroken iPhone/iPod Touch.

Method 1: Using Installous:
1. Click on “Manage” on the bottom of the Cydia screen.
2. Select “Sources” from the Cydia screen.
3. Select “Edit” on the top right of the screen. (You should be on a list of sources).
4. Select “Add” from the top left of the screen.
5. Enter the following when prompted: http://cydia.hackulo.us/
6. Press “Add Source“. Cydia will warn you about copyright information, just tap ok.

The hackulo.us repository is very crowded and they lack donations so it is down often. You can try the new brotherhood project repository http://cydia.install0.us/ - That is ZERO not O.

7. Once the source has been added, go to “Search” on the bottom of the Cydia window, or look in the hackulo.us repository.
8. Type in “Installous” and continue.
9. Install “Installous” on your iPhone from Cydia.
10. Go back to “Search” on the bottom of the Cydia window.
11. Type in “AppSync” and continue.
12. Install “AppSync 3.0 or 3.1“. (Dependant on your version of Firmware, either 3.0.x or 3.1.x)
13. You will need to likely respring your phone, so when Cydia prompts you to, just continue until you’re back to your iPhone home screen.
14. Find “Installous“, and load the application.
15. Locate the Application you want from the Installous Browser (which browses Appulo.us).

Method 2: iTunes method or .ipa method:
1. First you need to make sure that you have patched your MobileInstallation file on your device. If you don’t patch it, you won’t be able to install cracked apps.
2. Click on “Manage” on the bottom of the Cydia screen.
3. Select “Sources” from the Cydia screen.
4. Select “Edit” on the top right of the screen. (You should be on a list of sources).
5. Select “Add” from the top left of the screen.
6. Enter the following when prompted: http://cydia.hackulo.us/
7. Press “Add Source“.
8. Once the source has been added, go to “Search” on the bottom of the Cydia window.
9. Type in “AppSync” and continue.
10. Install “AppSync 3.0 or 3.1“. (Dependant on your version of Firmware, either 3.0.x or 3.1.x)
11. Reboot your iPhone/iPod Touch – Cracked apps will now work properly.
12. Double click on the .ipa file and sync your device with iTunes. (By double clicking the .ipa file, you will open the file with iTunes. The file will be automatically copied into the iTunes library. Once iTunes has loaded and the file has been opened, press sync and the installation will begin.)

Note: AppSync is for firmware 3.0 & 3.1, not 1.x or 2.x, & no need to use SSH and WinSCP with MobileInstaller.framework if you install AppSync – See Method 3 below.

Method 3: The SSH method or direct method:
1. Download cracked application via http://www.appulo.us or torrent websites.
2. Unzip the cracked application folder to your desktop.
3. SSH into iphone using WinSCP:

First make sure you have OpenSSH & OPENSSL installed from Rock, Icy or Cydia.

Next get WinSCP and find your iPhone’s ip by going to (on your iphone):

Settings > Wi-Fi > “Your selected WiFi” > Look under IP Address

Connect to your iPhone using WinSCP:

· User name: root

· Password: alpine (Unless you have previously changed your password to something more secure – see my post here on how to do that, or just install OpenSSH with Cydia, Rock or Icy, and a prompt will appear after asking if you would like to change your password)

· Change File Protocol to “SCP”.

Just press Login after your screen on WinSCP.

You will now see a popup asking to save your Server Key. Do it. (I also made a copy of this for backup purposes.)

If you are having trouble with log in please read this: Make sure OPENSSH & OPENSSL is definitely installed on your iphone – I could only get Winscp to work once, then it fails to log in every time after this, a reinstall of both WINSCP and OpenSSH & OpenSSL will fix it temporarily for one time again. I’m still working on this.

4. Once logged into WinSCP, navigate to /Applications.
5. Drag the cracked application (.app – Note 1) folder over to the /Applications folder and drop it in there.
6. Right click on the cracked application folder and change permissions to 0755 and select the box beside “set owner group and permissions recursively” (or go inside the folder, select everything, and set properties to 0755 as well), then hit ok.
7. In the /Applications folder, make a new folder called “Documents”, with a capital D. Change the permissions on the “Documents” folder you just created to 0777.
8. Navigate to /var/mobile/ and make a new folder called “Documents”, with a capital D. Change the permissions on the “Documents” folder you just created to 0777.
9. Reboot your device.

Notes:
1. If you have a .ipa file instead, change this extension to .zip, unzip the file and inside the payload folder you will see the .app folder that you can use to drop into your /Applications folder. If you cannot see the .ipa extension on your computer you will need to go into “Control Panel > Folder Options > View Tab > Untick “Hide extensions for known folder types”.

2. Some applications require you set permission to 0775. It seems to be random, so if 0755 doesn’t work, try 0775.

3. It appears you can add more than 1 Application to the device at a time before rebooting also.

Jailbreak info for iPhone 3.1.3 using PwnageTool 3.15 for MAC OS X only.

From the DevTeam today (08/02/10):
On Tuesday, Apple released firmware 3.1.3 for the iPhone and iPod touches. Unless you’ve personally observed a problem with the reporting of your battery percentage, there’s no reason to update to 3.1.3. We know some of you will want to anyway. Superbowl Sunday’s PwnageTool 3.1.5 for Mac OS X will let you do so safely, preserving your jailbreak and ultrasn0w unlock. (If you use the blacksn0w unlock (at baseband 05.11.07), you need to stay at 3.1.2.)

iPhone 3G and 3GS unlockers should always be very wary to update their firmware. This is no exception. If you make a mistake along the way you may find yourself updating to official 3.1.3 in which case you will lose your unlock, possibly forever.

iPhone 3GS users (regardless of unlock) should stay away from this and all 3.1.3 jailbreak tools unless you know you have your “SHSH hashes” backed up via Cydia. That’s because if you make a mistake you may find yourself stuck at official 3.1.3 with no way to jailbreak or come back down to 3.1.2 to jailbreak.

If you really truly feel that you need to update, this version creates a custom 3.1.3 IPSW for you to restore to on your iPhone 2G, iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS with early bootrom, iPod touch 1G, and iPod touch 2G with early bootrom. If you don’t know if you have an early bootrom or not, please avoid updating until you learn more.

You don’t need to be pre-jailbroken on anything but the iPod touch 2G early bootrom. And really for that device, it’s faster and easier to use redsn0w 0.9.4 as mentioned in our last post. For that matter, if you have an ipt1g, iphone2g, or iphone3g (and don’t need an unlock), you should use redsn0w too (but version 0.9.3). It’s faster and you won’t have to go through a full restore process (just do an update then run redsn0w, pointing it at 3.1.2 FW instead of 3.1.3).

If you have an iPhone 3GS, PwnageTool works if you’re currently at version 3.1.2 or below (down to 3.0). You don’t need to be already jailbroken — PwnageTool will ask you if you’re jailbroken after you’ve created the IPSW. Don’t use PwnageTool on the iPhone 3GS if you’re at 3.1.3, it just won’t work. Downgrade to 3.1.2 using the methods described here. If you can’t downgrade because you don’t have your 3GS 3.1.2 hashes on file with Cydia, you’ll need to sit out the 3.1.3 jailbreak.

We aren’t revealing any new exploits to Apple with this jailbreak. Everything here has been used before, it’s just a straightforward port of Pwnage2 and 24Kpwn to the new firmware. It’s possible the new firmware was released largely to flush out new exploits before the next big release. We won’t be biting.

We’d really like the above warnings and disclaimers to sink in. Please don’t download the files below and use them blindly.

R18+ Classification for Computer Games in Australia – Make a Vote

Comments (Optional - up to 250 words)

If a minor wants to play something now that is unsuitable they are able to quite easily. Most technologically savvy minors can easily download a cracked game illegally on the internet.

Making an 18+ rating will not change that fact, however it will make it easier for over 18’s to purchase games legally instead of those people downloading and using illegal games from the internet.

It has always been and always should be the parents’ job to police or control the content that their children watch or play. An 18+ rating should make it loud and clear that their child should not purchase or be playing these games.

Mentally unstable or unfit persons over 18 can also download illegal games that are banned from the internet at the moment anyway. That is a completely different issue that should be dealt with through the mental health system – i.e. More funding from the government perhaps.

iPhone update Firmware 3.1.3 JAILBREAKERS DO NOT UPGRADE!

Do not upgrade to Firmware version 3.1.3 yet – There is no access to Rock, Cydia or Icy.

This warning applies to owners of

3GS
iPod Touch 3
iPod touch 2 with serial *MC*
Any 3G unlockers

iPhone OS 3.1.3 is now out from Apple. Suuposedly it fixes some battery issues. There are no new features. The release only stops jailbreaks.

Currently there is no jailbreak for this firmware. Unofficial sources have confirmed that they have patched up the method used to jailbreak 3.1.2 so you will not be able to jailbreak. If you update you will lose all your jailbreak apps and will not be able to get them back. In other words, updating means you lose a lot of stuff in return for almost nothing back. In addition, there is no ETA on a jailbreak for 3.1.3.

Unlockers – You cannot unlock the new baseband. This would apply to those 3G users that can jailbreak 3G. If you update, you will not be able to unlock.

One more thing, as of right now, Apple is still signing 3.1.2 for 3GS users but no one knows for how much longer they will be. Make sure you “Rush” into Cydia or Rock and get your keys signed on the front page if you have not. This will make certain you can always restore 3.1.2 even in the future using Saurik’s server.

To summarise:
- Update adds NO NEW FEATURES, do not update.

- Update kills your jailbreak. Do not update.

- Get your 3GS 3.1.2 keys signed by Cydia/Rock now if you haven’t.

- Unlock does not work on the new baseband.

Update from Geohot - I hear rumors going around that the 3.1.3 jailbreak is hard. It isn't. But the only people it helps are those dumb enough to upgrade. Sorry.

DevTeam Update:

Update 1: [Don’t go near this if you have 3GS, newer ipt2G, or any ipt3G] Thanks to daring experimenters in the DevTeam comments, we can confirm that yesterday’s redsn0w works for today’s 3.1.3 update for iPhone 2G. Just point it at the 3.1.2 iPhone 2G IPSW after doing update or restore to 3.1.3. So far we’ve only confirmed this for iPhone 2G. (Note that if this does work for iPhone 3G too, you can *only* use it if you don’t care about the unlock.)

Update 2: [Don’t go near this if you have 3GS, newer ipt2G, or any ipt3G] Can confirm that this method works for iPhone 3G and iPod touch 1G too. Don’t do it for iPhone 3G if you need an unlock though (really, don’t!). For older iPod touch 2G, we’ll need a small (1-character) change in redsn0w source.

Update 3: [Don’t go near this if you have 3GS, newer ipt2G, or any ipt3G] For those with older (non-MC) iPod touch 2G, we’ve compiled a special version of redsn0w meant just for you: Mac and Windows. You guys can get in on the “3.1.2 loophole” too using this special version. Don’t try this if you have a newer iPod Touch 2G or if you’re not completely sure what version you have. And of course don’t try it for 3GS or ipt3G either.

That about does it for the 3.1.2 redsn0w loophole. Ultrasn0w/yellowsn0w/blacksn0w users shouldn’t go near it. Otherwise, it can be used by owners of iPhone 2G, iPhone 3G (not unlockers!), iPod 1G, and iPod 2G older version. Everyone else please wait for official support in the tools.

I’ve been using the following websites to make some money on my blog:

Adsense.com:

The tried and true Google Adsense ads, which are easy to add into your blog using the blogger.com website, however it seems to be the slowest money maker.

Linkbucks.com:

For about 150 hits you get about 2 cents, this is easy to make just by converting some of the links on your site with Linkbucks. You have a choice between making the ads just a popup at the top of the opening page or an entire page ad. The entire page ad will earn you a higher percentage per click, but will probably frustrate people so only use this sparingly.

Play-Asia.com:

This website is great for purchasing cheap region free console games for all around the world. They have an affiliate program of about 12% commission. I am making about 2 cents a sale, which looks like i’m only selling items worth 24 cents! (This seems really low – considering what they are advertising) I figure once I am on selling many more games the amount will go up. I will keep tabs on this and report back.

If you're using a wired network with a gigabit Ethernet switch:

If you're using a gigabit Ethernet switch device in your home network configuration and you're experiencing low video quality or choppy playback, try changing the flow control setting for your network adapter (also known as a network interface card (NIC)).

To enable flow control for your network adapter:
1. On your computer, click the Start button , click Control Panel, type view network connections in the search box, and then click View network connections.

2. Right-click your network connection, and then click Properties.

3. On the Networking tab, click Configure.

4. Click the Advanced tab, and in the list under Property, click Flow Control.

5. Under Value, choose an option to enable flow control (choose the Rx & Tx Enabled option if it's available), and then click OK.

NB: If enabling flow control doesn't help, you can also try changing the link speed for your network adapter (also known as a network interface card (NIC)).

To change the link speed for your network adapter:
1. On your computer, click the Start button , click Control Panel, type view network connections in the search box, and then click View network connections.

2. Right-click your network connection, and then click Properties.

3. On the Networking tab, click Configure.

4. Click the Advanced tab, and in the list under Property, click Link Speed & Duplex.

5. Under Value, choose the 100 Mbps Full Duplex option, and then click OK.

How to change how long your iPhone rings before calls go to voicemail.

NB: You can choose between 5 and 30 seconds in increments of 5 (5, 10, 15, etc.)

1. First, you’ll need to know your voicemail access number. The easiest way to get this is to dial *#61# and then press Call on your iPhone’s keypad.

The first block of text you’ll see on the screen that comes up will be:

Eg: iPhone, carrier = Optus.

Where +XXXXXXXXXXX is shown as an actual number - write this number down because you’ll need it in the next steps. You can ignore the rest of the text that is shown for the purposes of this exercise.

2. To change how long your iPhone rings, dial *61*+XXXXXXXXXXX*11*tt# where +XXXXXXXXXXX is the number you wrote down from the first step above and tt is the length of time in seconds for which you want your iPhone to ring. To get the + sign to show up, hold down the 0 key for a couple of seconds and release it when it turns into the + sign in the readout above. Then press Call.

Eg. iPhone, carrier = Optus

To give you an example, I dialled *61*+61411000321*11*30# then pressed Call to change my iPhone ring to last 30 seconds. After this, assuming you’ve entered everything correctly, you’ll see the following message:

I recently placed an advertisement to sell my Nissan 350Z on Australia’s No.1 car sales website (http://www.carsales.com.au/). After a week or so, Nathanial Dodge from a company called Vehicle Mania (http://www.vehiclemania.com.au) called me offering extra advertising for $100 AUD on their new website. I was a little unsure, and so after a promise that if after 3 months (* which I have in writing on an email) that if my car is not sold and I wished to pull the ad from their website I would get my money back, so I agreed to go with it.

The website is not their primary vehicle of car sales, they primarily use the Trading Post for advertising. I was not able to sell my car using their website however, but I was able to get in contact with Steve who is the Manager and I was able to get my money back. He also gave me a free advertisement in the Trading Post as a sign of good faith. Overall I am very happy with this company.

How to Activate and Enable Free Internet Tethering on iPhone 3.0+

Run Safari mobile web browser on the iPhone.
Visit the following Mobileconfigs website: http://help.benm.at/tethering.php or http://www.iphone-notes.de/mobileconfig/
Select your country.
Select your mobile service provider.
Tap Install to install new profile.
Select Install Now to download and install new profile.
On iPhone interface, go to Settings -> General -> Network -> Internet Tethering.
Set Internet Tethering to On.
If prompted that Bluetooth is off, select Turn on Bluetooth or USB Only according to your preference.
Internet tethering is enabled, connect iPhone to PC computer via USB or Bluetooth to start connecting to Internet though iPhone as tethered Internet gateway modem, with typical mobile broadband connection speed, normally up to around 1.4 Mbps.

Note: Tethering computer through USB to iPhone to access Internet is much easier. Normally, Windows or Mac system will automatically recognize the tethered iPhone, and create require network connection to take advantage of the shared Internet access via iPhone. For Bluetooth connection, other than usual pairing, user also has to select “Connect to Network” from the Bluetooth device option in order to access the Internet from desktop or notebook/laptop computer via tethered iPhone.

After downloading and installing the new Internet tethering enabled profile, some users may report MMS and/or VVM (Visual Voicemail) problem, where MMS or Visual Voicemail stops working. To fix the MMS and VVM not working after enabling Internet tethering error, go to Settings -> General -> Reset ->Reset Network Settings. After the short reset, iPhone should be able to be used for MMS, Voicemail and Internet tethering.

How to Mute or send incoming calls to Voice Mail on a locked iPhone

When the iPhone screen is locked, the only option you see on screen at the time of incoming call is ‘Slide to answer’.

So how do you reject if you don’t want to answer the call?

You can let it ring and Mute the ringer by clicking the power button at the top of the phone ONCE. Alternatively you can press the volume bar at the sides to mute the ringer as well.
If you don’t want to accept the call at all and want it go to your voice mail instead, press the power button at the top of the phone TWICE. That will reject the incoming call immediately and send the caller to your voice mail.

NB: If your iPhone screen is not locked, you are presented with an option to Answer or Reject the call.

How to change your iPhone’s Default SSH Password

If you jailbreak your iPhone with anything other than GeoHot’s balckra1n*, then the first thing you ABSOLUTELY MUST DO is change the default filesystem password.

*blackra1n doesn’t install SSH by default, therefore this should not be a problem if you used blackra1n to jailbreak, unless you installed the OpenSSH package from Cydia.

When you jailbreak, the filesystem’s password is set to the common password “alpine.” As people usually don’t bother changing this password after performing a jailbreak, it’s really easy for hackers to get access to any jailbroken iPhone/iPod Touch on a public network.

An Australian guy called Ashley Towns demonstrated this by circulating the first known iPhone worm, known as Ikee, which replaces your lockscreen wallpaper with an image of Rick Astley. Luckily Town’s Rickrolling is benign. He wrote the worm to demonstrate how easy it is to break into jailbroken iPhones.

Note: There is no need to follow this guide if you haven’t jailbroken your iPhone/iPod Touch.

You need:
- Jailbroken iPhone / iPod Touch
- Cydia
- MobileTerminal

Here’s how to change the default SSH password after jailbreaking:

1. Make sure you have Cydia or Rock installed on your jailbroken device. If you don’t already have MobileTerminal installed, launch Cydia or Rock and tap the ‘Search’ tab in the bottom navigation bar.

2. Type ‘MobileTerminal’ in the search field and select the first result. Select ‘Install’ on the top right corner and tap ‘Confirm’ on the next screen. It will now install MobileTerminal on your device. Now, tap on ‘Return to Cydia’ and tap home button.

3. Navigate to the newly installed ‘Terminal’ application and tap to open.

4. In MobileTerminal, type ’su root’ and tap return. It will ask you for a password, enter ‘alpine’ and tap return again.

5. Now, type ‘passwd’ and then tap return. Type in a new password such as ’donthackme’ and tap return. Retype the new password to confirm and then tap return one last time to change the password.

6. Now, your SSH password will be changed and your device will be protected against any future hacks that use SSH to access your device.

How to upload and read .pdf, .doc & .lit ebooks on iPhone using Stanza.

I’ve found the best free app to upload my own ebooks is LexCycle Stanza.

First install Stanza on your iPhone/iPodtouch, and then install Stanza Desktop on your PC (52MB) or MAC. Stanza Desktop is a desktop application used for reading ebooks (.pdf, .doc, .lit, .rtf, .txt, .azw, see all Supported Formats).

Now open Stanza and open an ebook file by going to “File” and go down to “Open File…” and browse through the directories of your computer for the ebook. Click “Open” to finish.

I have found that .lit files are the best for this as they provide book title information and a picture of the cover.

Now that the ebook has loaded go to “Tools” and make sure “Enable Sharing” is checked.

So now we launch Stanza on the iPhone/iPodtouch that’s connected to the same network as your computer. Note that you will have to be connected through a Wireless connection, see here for how to setup an adhoc Wireless network. As I have a jailbroken phone, I am using the MyWi App to create a WiFi Hotspot to connect my iPhone to my PC.

Now in the “Library” menu hit “Shared Books” and give it a few seconds to connect to your network. Now your computer name should be on the screen; mine says “derby”, click on your computer name and give it another few seconds to scan.

Windows will ask if you want to allow a connection between the two devices. After you’ve allowed the connection the ebook should appear on the iPhone/iPodtouch.

Click on the ebook and will get the option to “Download” to your device.

You can now view your titles via Cover Flow by opening the “Titles” section and tilting your device to the side.

Just completed jailbreaking my iPhone with firmware update 3.1.2 using blackra1n RC2. I have created a pdf document with steps that I used:

Some important notes before we begin:

Backup your iPhone using itunes so all your contacts/phone numbers can be restored after cracking the device. Your apps may need to be loaded on again after separately however if the phone needs to be restored.
You must have iTunes 9 installed and you must be on firmware 3.1.2, if you are not, be sure to update via iTunes.
The iPhone can be restored back to normal using itunes without any trace of Jailbreaking anytime.
blackra1n RC2 works with all iPhone and iPod touches, but the newer iPod touch and iPhone are only tethered jailbreaks. Tethered means that you will need to run blackra1n each time you reboot your iPhone or iPod touch.

Step 1: Get the tools.

Notes:

Step 4. Your iPhone or iPod Touch will reboot once blackra1n has completed and you should see the blackra1n icon on there. If you don’t see the blackra1n icon, go to the last page on your iDevice and you should see it.

Step 5. Install your preferred Installer from the blackra1n app. You have the option of choosing Cydia, Icy, or Rock. I don’t recommend you install them all at once, because that may cause problems. Install them one at a time.

My Installer of choice is Rock as it is the latest and greatest, faster and has a backup functionality for your apps when re-jailbreaking.

Issues When Jailbreaking (How to RESTORE the iPhone back to Normal):
The first time I tried jailbreaking my iPhone, after the first jailbreak the phone would not restart correctly and just stayed on the Apple (was then a Pineapple) logo logon screen.

To fix this I had to force the Phone into recovery mode and restore the phone back to ORIGINAL settings:

• Hold the top button and home button down until it turned off.
• Once it's turned off, plug the iPhone into your PC.
• Press and hold the "Home" button and keep holding the "Home" button until you see a dock cable pointing to the iTunes icon on the iPhone screen.
• Open iTunes (if it's not already open) and you will be told that "iTunes has detected an iPhone in recovery mode".
• Click "OK" and you will be taken to the iPhone pane. Click restore and your iPhone will load back to its original untouched state (a firmware file may need to be downloaded to your pc if you don’t have it locally already).

Once the restore was complete, I then tried the above process of Jailbreaking the iPhone again, however now I could use the Firmware file that was downloaded directly from Apple for my iPhone. The file was found in the following directory on my pc (Win XP):
C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Apple Computer\iTunes\iPhone Software Updates

iPhone 3.0.1 onwards issues resolved with Firmware 3.1.2.

My iPhone was causing me a bit of grief after the last couple of Firmware upgrades as when it would go to sleep it wouldn’t wake up. I would have to hold both the power and the home buttons simultaneously to reboot the phone.

The new Firmware 3.1.2 fixes this issue:

Resolves sporadic issue that may cause iPhone not to wake from sleep.
Resolves intermittent issue that may interrupt cellular services until restart.
Fixes bug that could cause occasional crash during video stream.

So far so good, I haven’t had to restart it once in the last week, whereas I was having to do this about 3-4 times a day.

How to view 2 or more instances of Excel files over multiple monitors:

Excel 2003:
- Go to Tools -> Options -> General tab.
- Make sure the option, ‘Ignore other applications’ is checked. Now all the Excel files will be opened as separate instance and you can move the Excel files individually across the monitors.
Each time you open a file, excel will open blank so just go into the Open file again and open the file you want.

Excel 2007:
- Click the Office button -> Excel Options -> Advanced.
- Under General, check ‘Ignore other applications that use Dynamic Data Exchange’.

Convert .avi’s to an iPhone (.mp4) with HandBrake

I have finally found a free bit of Open source software that I can use to convert my .avi tv shows and movies to a format that is compatible with my iPhone (.mp4).

HandBrake

HandBrake is an open-source, GPL-licensed, multiplatform, multithreaded video transcoder, available for MacOS X, Linux and Windows.

As you can see all you have to do is choose the output format on the right hand side of the screen and set up the output filenames and it does the rest for you. I’ve found it very easy to use.

For anyone who is frustrated with MS Windows Explorer Copy and Move, which don’t accurately show the time a file takes to copy or move and that you can’t pause it:

TeraCopy is a compact program designed to copy and move files at the maximum possible speed, providing the user a lot of features:

Copy files faster. TeraCopy uses dynamically adjusted buffers to reduce seek times. Asynchronous copy speeds up file transfer between two physical hard drives.
Pause and resume file transfers. Pause copy process at any time to free up system resources and continue with a single click.
Error recovery. In case of copy error, TeraCopy will try several times and in the worse case just skips the file, not terminating the entire transfer.
Interactive file list. TeraCopy shows failed file transfers and lets you fix the problem and recopy only problem files.
Shell integration. TeraCopy can completely replace Explorer copy and move functions, allowing you work with files as usual.

When booting my main PC without the Windows 7 installation DVD I come up with something like:

Bootmgr missing

I have had the same issue with the latest Windows 7 RC 32bit and 64bit on my main PC. However not on my other PCs I have installed (they each only had one HDD installed). It looks as though when I have multiple Hard Drives whilst installing is what is causing the issue.

By unplugging all drives when installing Windows 7 RC this seems to eliminate the problem and Windows 7 installs and then runs fine without requiring the installation DVD to boot up.

The chassis is built around the 15.4 inch screen (though the first units that come to market will have 16-inch or 17-inch screens) and its twin, identically sized screen slides out from behind the first using a uniquely designed sliding mechanism.

It was designed so that if you do not need the extra screen you do not have to use it. I am assuming that this will mean it will not use extra power with only one screen on, so only when I am in an office type situation would external power to keep the batteries from running flat quickly.

Temporary Work Around - iPhone Firmware 3.0.1 dropping sound/audio from calls.

Every since I updated my iPhone to Firmware 3.0.1 the sound in my phone calls would randomly drop off. The call doesn’t actually cut off, but the sound would “mute” where I can hear the other person, but they cannot hear me.

The firmware patch 3.0.1 was sent out to fix the SMS (text) messaging hole, however they seem to have broken the audio function during phone calls. This affects ANY version of the iPhone (original, 3G, 3GS) running the updated firmware.

When Apple releases the next Firmware (v3.1) in a few weeks this will apparently be fixed.

Temporary Work Around:

When you’re on a call and the audio suddenly drops, look down and turn on your speaker phone, then turn it immediately off again. It somehow reactivates the audio.

Additionally, this problem seems to occur less when you are not using the 3G network. So you can use the EDGE network more often if you want. (under Settings, General, Network) Turn off “Enable 3G”. This will reduce your internet speeds, but improve call quality. If you want to surf, you can turn it back on.

Guide: How to Create and Change SMS Tones on a Jailbroken iPhone

What you need:

* A jailbroken iphone. See my How to Guide for Jailbreaking the iPhone for Firmware Version 3.1.2 here.

* Use IphoneBrowser v1.93* or Winscp to view the file structure of your iPhone.

*Important Blackra1n note:
-Blackra1n does not create the afc2 service needed by iPhoneBrowser.
-Install the afc2add program by searching in ‘Rock’ to add the service.

* Download these pre-made iPhone SMS tone sets (Approx 80Mb). You can rearrange the sounds and rename the top folder name (e.g. SMSTones1 to SMS1) anyway you like, as long as the file name of the UISounds folder and the file names within remain exactly the same.

* iTunes (For Creating SMS tones – converting tool).

Change the factory SMS Tones:

1. Using IphoneBrowser or Winscp, copy the SMS tone sets into the following folder in your Jailbroken iphone:

Var > Stash > Themes

2. Now activate just one of these new SMS Tone Themes in Winterboard.

3. Exit Winterboard (Wait for respring) and now choose the SMS tone you want on your iphone from:

Settings > Sounds > New Text Message

The tone names will still be the same (but with different sounds) – and the files will still be called:

sms-received1.caf - Tri-tone
sms-received2.caf - Chime
sms-received3.caf - Glass
sms-received4.caf - Horn

Now go to explorer and simply rename the .AIFF extension of the song to .CAF and you can now rename it to fit into the UISounds folder as above (remember you must use the factory file names for the SMS tones to be read by the iphone).

Unidentified Network Windows 7 - Solved!

One of my Windows 7 PCs on my Home network (which has 3 XP machines, 1 Vista, and 2 Windows 7 machines) started having the "Unidentified Network" problem. It wouldn’t connect to the already existing Home Network setup that it previously connected to fine. After some trial and effort and research, this is the following approach that worked for me:

First of all I checked CMD Prompt to see my current IP address using the command: ipconfig and it had 169.254.x.x which appears when the gateway fails to give the computer a correct address. Which should be something like 192.168.x.x (dependant on your network setup).

So I changed my adapter MAC address:

Device Manager >
Network Adapters >
Right Click on the network card >
Properties >
Advanced Tab >
Network Address and enter a 12-digit alphanumeric string (0 to 9 or A to F) in the value field eg 1234567890AB >
OK

Now open CMD prompt and type:
ipconfig /release
Enter
ipconfig /renew
Enter

Success! Now my pc is back on the correct network and I am able to stream movies to my other PCs again.

UPDATE: Microsoft has an article relating to this issue here. It looks like the issue goes back to Windows Vista not able to obtain an IP address from certain routers or from certain non-microsoft DHCP servers. I will update this post soon to show the 2nd option here.

On the first gen iPhone, the source for 3rd party apps was through Installer (also known as AppTapp). Now, with the iPhone 3G, Installer has taken a backseat to Cydia, which is the best place to download apps for jailbroken phone.

I decided today that I need to do a security audit of all of my internet accounts and set new passwords to much stronger ones. So first of all I changed my hotmail account, and then onto my Facebook account. Once I set the second password, in green letters the words:

Appeared below my password. What the heck is this? Apparently it means:

In Malaysian, according to http://www.citcat.com/. On Yahoo! Answers others have said it means “Exact Phrase” taken from http://dictionary.bhanot.net/ but I could not find that reference anywhere on that site. So I am going with the Citcat translation. (Anyone who can actually speak Malaysian who can clear this up it would be great to hear from you).

Back to more secure passwords, to make a stronger password I am using some of the below principles in order to make it more difficult for a hacker to get into my accounts:

a minimum eight characters
a mix of upper and lower case letters
at least one numeral, and
at least one non-alpha numeric character—for example, a symbol.
Avoid using dictionary or foreign words
Change your password at least twice a year
Avoid passwords like your name or business name
Use different passwords for different systems

While I am not using cryptographic strength or ascii passwords, (I would never be able to remember them), the passwords will hopefully be able to slow most people down.

Xobni for Outlook – Search Emails & Link with Facebook & LinkedIn

I have been using the Xobni (Inbox backwards) plugin for a few months now with Outlook 2007.

With the catch line “Drowning in Email?” that rings so true for me as I have about 5 different email accounts linked to my Outlook, I have found this to be an invaluable tool to quickly help me find old emails and documents sent to me.

I really love that you can click on an email and by selecting either the LinkedIn or Facebook tab Xobni attempts to match the senders email address to a LinkedIn or Facebook account. It also has tabs for Stats, Actions & Hoosiers.

If you are already a friend on Facebook then you can see that contacts info, pics and their live stream, but even if you are not friends…and…they have not made their photos private, you can actually see some private photo albums from that contact.

What happened to Friendcsv for Backups on Facebook?

This was a handy little application I have used on Facebook a couple of times. Basically through Facebook you would go to this app and request a .csv file be sent to you from Friendcsv via email.

The .csv file would include a list of all of your contacts plus the following info:

User ID, Name, Sex, Birthday, About Me, Current Location, Hometown, Profile Link, Profile Pic Link, High Shool Year, Education Location, Work, & Affiliations.

Apart from being an excellent contacts backup tool, I used two export files from approx 1 year between the two to work out who I have unfriended or have been unfriended by (Made an interesting list). Plus I managed to get all the data and import birthdays and pics etc into my Outlook Contacts which has been really helpful for remembering all my friends birthdays (there’s almost 800 and counting so far).

At this stage it looks like it has been removed from Facebook apps, possibly because it violated Facebook’s Terms Of Service (TOS).

I sent an email to Dan Birdwhistell, one of the creators from Bigsight to find out what happened, but so far have not heard anything back (unsurprising as he probably has a busy schedule).

Windows 7 RC

So far i’ve installed Windows 7 RC on 3 pcs at home. My main pc, a test pc i’m building as a media centre pc for my new house, and a friends pc which is identical to the test pc I have (he did give that one to me).

The installation was so quick and easy, 20mins install approximately, and it was able to load up nearly all drivers for legacy cards etc during setup. That was one of the problems I expected to encounter but was pleasantly surprised that everything was working fine. The only issue I am having at the moment is trying to network the pcs to each other. The instructions seem very easy and yet I still cant get two of the Windows 7 machines to see each other, let alone any of the other Vista or XP machines we have on the network at home.

I’m keen to get this issue sorted so I can add my Xbox 360 to the network and stream my movies and TV shows all around the house to my TVs and projector. Its annoying having to transfer movies across each time I want to watch something using a USB stick.

Windows Live (Msn) Messenger Spam

Over the past few months I've been receiving a lot of MSN Spam from friends via MSN Messenger. Examples of it include:

Most of these messages are being sent whilst the sender is actually offline, they have probably inadvertantly clicked on a website link which has sent them to a false MSN.com, Hotmail.com, or Live.com website which they have logged in on using their email and password. This has then been sent directly to the spammer which have now been logging in and spamming all the people on your contact lists.

The best way to stop this is to sign in the the correct Website where your msn passport is. ie msn.com, hotmail.com or live.com...even yahoo.com dependant on which messenger program you are using. Then change your password.

For peace of mind, also run a scan on your PC for Malware, Spyware and Virus's.

Short Film: What's In The Box

Just watched this short film that's just been released on the net by a group of Dutch film-makers, What's in the box? It seems no one really knows what the short film was made for - is it a viral marketing ad or a clip from an upcoming movie? Whatever it is, its pretty kool, has the makings of an interesting movie/game.

I signed up for a twitter account a while back but up until this week I couldnt find much use for it, but now that ive just upgraded my work PC to Outlook 2007 i've added in a couple of add-ons: OutTwit and FBLook, so im getting right into it again.

OutTwit is pretty good, its not disimilar to RSS feeds, so if I want I can stalk famous personalities like the Kutchers who seem to tweet every single thing they are doing from when they wake up until they go to sleep.

FBLook is also good, there is a drop down menu which displays all of the latest status updates of my friends on Facebook and also if I have received any new messages/wall posts etc.

uTorrent's Parentheses (Brackets) Explained

When using uTorrent, one of my colleagues at work was asking me exactly what the numbers in parentheses (Brackets) meant in seeders/leechers, for example: Seeds 0(104) Peers 93(663)?

Seeds:

The first number, 0, is the amount of seeds you're connected to.

The number in parentheses, 104, is the amount of seeds in the swarm.

Peers:

The first number, 93, is the amount of peers (leechers) you're connected to.

The number in parentheses, 663, is the amount of peers (leechers) in the swarm.

Swarm is the number of peers/seeds connected to the torrent.

Seed is a peer who has completed the file and are uploading to other peers.

Leecher has become a term for peers that haven't yet finished downloading the torrent.

Extra info:

The number in parentheses is the total number of seeders/leechers in the swarm. uTorrent limits the total number of peers per torrent to 50, so you will never be connected to more than 50 seeds/leeches on one torrent. There could be thousands of peers in the entire swarm, however.

Note that sometimes, the tracker reports an incorrect number of seeds/leeches. When this happens, the number in parentheses may be ridulously high, even though there are not very many peers in the swarm. There is one tracker, for instance that reports the total number of seeds/leeches that have *ever* been on a torrent since the time it was created. This means that you could be downloading a torrent that was created two years ago that only has 5 seeds and 10 leeches currently, but the numbers in the parentheses would say something like (10000).

Ive started dowloading most of my torrents using Feed My Torrents at http://feedmytorrents.com/, it was pretty handy as I could just choose which tv shows I wanted to download using RSS links on the website. I had uTorrent setup to automatically download new shows as soon as they were released on the net. I just noticed today that the site was down though, hopefully it hasnt been shut down....

Update (19/02/09) - Ok now the site's back up again...

Update (17/07/09) - It appears to have gone down a month or two ago, and is still down...don't think it's coming back this time.

Update (22/07/09) - I just found some more info, http://blogs.smh.com.au/gadgetsonthego/archives/2009/05/feedmytorrents_rip.html it appears a reporter from the Sydney Morning Herald has called their host up and the site has been shut down due to the possibility of 3 things:

1. the site was shut down due to hosting costs.
2. the site was shut down due to a nasty letter from the copyright police.

Xbox 360 RROD - Red Ring of Death

Ahh the red ring of death, one of my friends texted me last week, asking if I knew what "3 red lights" meant when he turned his xbox 360 on. I immediately phoned him back and let him know the bad news....that his Xbox is suffering from the well-known overheating problem (amongst online xbox circles) also called the "Red Ring of Death - RROD". Why does electronic gear (namely anything to do with Microsoft) all have some sort of colour "OF DEATH" associated with them? Like the also infamous Blue Screen of Death - BSOD for Windows PCs, this doesn't doesn't help their cause i'm sure.

Back to the problem at hand, I've spent a number of hours "researching" (Googling in my case) some solutions, but I don't really have the time to sit down and pull apart xbox's for friends. Oh I can see a niche market in my town if someone would startup an Xbox repairs and modding shop. So I told him to ring Microsoft because apparently they have a 3 year warranty now for Xbox's experiencing this problem. Not the best solution, because it’ll probably take 4-6 weeks turnaround.

My friend just introduced me to a web-based chat client called Meebo: http://www.meebo.com/ so far you can use it to log into your existing chat accounts like Facebook, Msn, Yahoo, AIM, Myspace, Googletalk, ICQ, Jabber, Flixter, Piczo, Wadja & Zorpia (I have no idea what the last 4 are). If you create your own account with Meebo, all you need to do is logon once and it auto-logs on to all of your chat accounts. It certainly makes for a lot of online contacts.

Microsoft PhotoSynth

After reading about the Barack Obama Inauguaration, I stumbled upon (not literally) Microsoft's Photosynth website (http://photosynth.net), where you can add your own 2D photos and they get stitched and turned into a public 3D image. Anybody can now see your photos, and even add to it making the event, landmark or occasion more realistic.

I added my own photos of the Big Day Out Festival on the Goldcoast 2009 as a test.

Its just a pity it doesnt work with google chrome as yet.

HDMI cables & 3-way switch

I managed to find enough coin to buy a couple of HDMI cables for my projector and TV including a HDMI splitter that I can use with a remote control to switch between the two. Technically, the switcher said it was for using with multiple inputs, ie PS3, Xbox etc, but im using it for multiple outputs, ie Projector and TV. It still works the same way, I figured it would when I bought it. It looks similar to this:

So now I dont have to get up and change the cables every time I go to watch an .avi from the DVD player, play Xbox or watch TV.

Gears of War 2

Well now that christmas holidays are over I can reflect on everything I got up to. Xbox, beer, Xbox. Probably the most time ive actually spent playing the thing. I finally got to finish a couple of games, Gears of War 2, Guitar Hero 3 (On easy - oh yes it was easy) and then managed to get stuck playing Bioshock..i probably should have played it on easy instead of medium...then i might have clocked that too. I was given another copy of Bioshock for christmas, now i just need some more friends to play some multiplayer with me...otherwise i should probably sell it on ebay.

Gears of War 2 is awesome. I especially love how when you zoom in the focus shifts from object to object giving it a sense of reality.

This is my favourite show at the moment, im currently downloading the latest episode from the states right now - S03E12. Cant wait to see what happens next. Considering how creepy this show is, its just damn fascinating to watch the man at work.

The TV Series was adapted from the novel 'Darkly Dreaming Dexter' by Jeff Lindsay. Its set in Miama and the series centres on Dexter Morgan (Michael C. Hall), a serial killer who works for the Miami Metro Police dept as a blood spatter analyst.

Its interesting to watch Dexter kill via his set of rules - which include only killing people who deserve it ie other serial killers and how hes been getting away with it for such a long time.

Last week my flatmates and I pulled out the Risk boardgame and had a crack at it. As two of them were relatively new to the game and so it was easy to get in the lead. But still my other flatmate was an old veteran of the game like me and managed to take over the world in no time. I used to play this game a lot as a kid and played it so much that I even created some extra rules using monopoly money and houses to create bombs, factories and a currency in the game.

Risk is a turn-based game for two to six players, and is played on a board depicting a stylized Napoleonic-era political map of the Earth, divided into forty-two territories, which are grouped into six continents. Players control armies, with which they attempt to capture territories from other players. The goal of the game is to control all the territories—or "conquer the world"—through the elimination of the other players. Xbox 360 - GOW2 & Left 4 Dead

I spent the weekend playing Gears of War 2 and Left 4 Dead with some mates, GOW2 is an old favourite and I just purchased Left 4 Dead last week. L4D is absolutely hectic, I played it with another friend online against some random people on Xbox Live - It starts off with the 4 of us walkking through a forest or a city somewhere and within a minute we are surrounded by swarms of zombies. All we are doing is yelling and shooting everything in sight, including our own team mates..once the immediate zombies are dead and the adrenalin is wearing off we all are having a good laugh and chatting about how crazy that just was. The whole game is like that which is pretty intense after a few hours - but hell fun. I wanted to grab another copy so we could system link up and play against another 2 players at home, so we went to 5 different video stores around town but not one of them had a single copy of it to even rent out.

We followed that up with a 5 player system link match of Halo 3, always good for a laugh as well, i totally suck at that game - always coming in the bottom 2 players hahaha.

I was introduced to RSS Readers a few years ago but only just in this last year have I been really using this technology. Its another great tool to be able to sort through a lot of information in a short time, my current Reader of choice is Google Reader, its quick and very easy to use.

Google Chrome

Ive been using the Google Chrome browser for a while now and i've found I can't go back to using IE or Firefox as they're far too slow. I'm loving the startup page which is similar to an addon I was using in Firefox (Speed Dial) which displays the most used websites so i can quickly view then click on the sites I want to go too. It's made perusing the web so much faster than the other traditional methods.

In the beginning there were a few bugs, some websites weren't displaying correctly, but that seems to be resolved now and another annoying bug was adobe flash player wasnt up to date for chrome, (I did find a work around for that by googling the problem but it was annoying to have to solve this issue on every pc I installed Chrome on) but that has also now been corrected with a new adobe version. Im still waiting for the add-ons for chrome, in particular I want Cooliris to be available for chrome as it makes scanning for pictures so quick and easy on the net, especially google image search.

The battery life on the iPhone 3G is pretty bad, i can only get around 8 hours of use out of it, but using the Ipower I can plug my phone into it and double the usage of it. It should be good for the next time I have to fly anywhere or go away for the weekend as I wont have to worry about trying to find another power point behind the games machines at the airport...
